7 Horrible Skincare Habits You Need to Break Right Now

For some of us, when we think of skin care, we think about a morning and/or night routine. What comes to mind might be the process of washing your face and moisturizing. Maybe you even think about exfoliating, or perhaps 20 other steps in between. Our skincare routine is how we actively take care of our skin both in and out of the bathroom. The condition of your skin is not solely dependent on how you wash your face. What you do (or don’t do) throughout the day can also impact your skin. Are you guilty of any of these horrible skincare habits?

1. Not drinking enough water.

Did you know our bodies are composed of 60% water? Your skin cells, just like any other cell in the body, is made of water. Without proper hydration, those cells will not function properly. This can lead to dry and flaky skin. A good rule of thumb is to aim for eight 8-oz glasses of water a day. Don’t forget that you’re unique! There are several factors that could influence how much water you need, such as how active you are, your environment, your overall health, and whether or not you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

2. Forgetting to moisturize.

It’s not enough to drink water daily. The water you drink will hydrate your internal organs before it reaches your skin. Make sure you find the right moisturizer for you! Oily or acne prone skin will want a lightweight moisturizer that is oil-free. People with dry skin will want something that targets and soothes dryness. If you have sensitive skin, you will want a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer to avoid irritating your skin.

3. Drinking too much alcohol.

Alcohol dehydrates your skin every time you drink, and it can also cause your face to look bloated and puffy. On top of all that, drinking can accelerate aging. Alcohol has no nutrients, and it can have a negative impact on your vitamin A level. Vitamin A is an important antioxidant that is  important in the production of collagen, which is what keeps your skin looking young. If you do go out to drink, don’t forget to have some water in between.

4. Sleeping with your makeup on.

Stop doing this! Mascara that has been left on can cause eyelashes to become brittle and break. Foundation left on overnight can seriously clog up your pores. All the oils your body secretes overnight will mix with the makeup and create this disgusting mess on your face. Sleeping with makeup can also further irritate acne.

5. Not cleaning your makeup brushes.

Makeup brushes are essential for makeup pros and pros in the making. However, brushes can easily accumulate bacteria, dust, and dirt. Using dirty brushes can irritate your skin, clog your pores, and cause breakouts. Besides, dirty brushes will impact the performance of your tools. The products will blend together and result in a different outcome than you intended.

6. Putting on sunscreen only once a day, or even worse, not at all!

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. You should be using sunscreen every day if you plan on going outside. A non-sunny day is no excuse. Snow, sand and water reflects the sun’s rays, which actually increases the need for sunscreen. Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outdoors, and reapply it according to the directions on your bottle.

7. Neglecting your body in general.

Don’t forget to take care of your body! This includes not getting enough sleep and feeding yourself more junk food than anything. Lack of sleep can lead to your skin looking dull and dehydrated. Eating too much junk food can lead to breakouts. Healthy skin starts with a healthy body.

Which horrible skincare habits are you guilty of? If you don’t have a skincare routine yet, try making your own, affordable skincare routine. You don’t need fancy products to get started!
